Fraser Island is all about nature-based tourism and conservation, so we provide accommodation that is environmentally, socially and economically sustainable.
As our dedication to have minimal impact on the environment, we hope to inspire guests and raise awareness by protecting and working with the environment, so each house runs on its own 100% solar power . We are not connected to mainland power supply ie the grid. You do not see power poles on Fraser Island. Solar energy is not only sustainable, it is renewable and is about as natural a source of power as it is possible to generate electricity.
As all of the houses have adequate power for what is supplied with the house, unfortunately the use of extra power will overload the system and may result in blackouts. We ask that you are conservative with your energy consumption, switching off lights when not in use, ie not leaving lights on all night (for a night light – using a torch may be an alternative).
Limited use is okay of phone/laptop/camera chargers, sleep apnoea and asthma machines. Did you know that leaving chargers switched on but disconnected from the phone/laptop still draws power, also that lap tops charging draws as much power as one of our fridges.
PLEASE DO NOT attempt to plug in appliances such as hairdryers, hair straighteners, rice cookers, car fridges, coffee machines etc, under any circumstances.
All the houses have gas hot water and gas stove/ovens, so not relevant to the solar power.
